1983 Porsche introduces the model 944. Derived from
the 924, assembled at Audi in Neckarsulm with the engines ( 2479cc OHC
4 cyl engine with balance shafts developing 143hp) assembled at Zufffenhausen.
AC, removable roof, power windows. 5 speed transaxle with optional automatic.
1984: Power steering, electric hatch release became standard;
options power sunroof, cruise, partial leather
1985: Unchanged from previous year till mid 1985. Midyear
model change implemented a new dashboard and electrical system, full climate
control, drivers power seat, phone dial wheels, redesigned rear suspension,
and new control arms.
1986: Mandatory third brake light mounted at the top of the
rear glass hatch, 10-year no-rust warranty, 5-year/50000mile drivetrain
warranty. Options include central locking, full leather, sport suspension.
1987: New suspension allows ABS. New timing belt tensioner
appears. Optional air bags, ABS, 928-style wheels.
944S: First introduced as a 1987 model. 2.5liter DOHC 4 cyl with 16v head,
188hp, DME injection, self-diagnosis; "16 Ventiler" on front of door guards.
Options: air bags, sport suspension, ABS.
1988: Engine output increased to 158hp via higher compression,
central locking and upgraded F/R antisway bars std.
1988 944S now includes oil level warning, air bags as standard
equipment.
1989: 2.7 liter engine, 162hp. Alarm with LEDs in lock buttons,
Cruise, power sunroof std.
944S2: First introduced as a 1989 model. 208hp, resonant induction, car
combines Turbo features like the nose, susp. and Bempo (4 piston) brakes,
oil cooler and trans. with 3.0 liter engine.
1990 944S2: Cabriolet debuts in the 1990 model year. Coupe:
rear wiper std. Optional sport susp from '89 944 Turbo.
1991 944S2: Improved DME, "check engine" monitor, suspension
bushing upgrades, brake pad wear sensors updated, new rear spoiler, new
alarm.
1992 - 1995: Porsche introduces what was originally
going to be refered to as the series 3 (or 944 S3) but later introduced
under the factory model designation 968. Based on the 944 S2 3.0
liter motor, the car received upgrades and enhancement beyond the flush
mount headlights and the new bodywork front and rear including engine performance
refinements and a 6 speed gearbox. Offered in Coupe and Cabriolet
form factors.
